Head Injuries, a general approach
  • Language: English
  • Tags: EMS Medical Treatment
Description

When a person with a head injury arrives at the hospital, doctors and nurses first check life signs: cardiac work, blood pressure and breathing. For those who do not breathe satisfactorily, a extractor fan may be required. Doctors immediately assess the patient's state of mind and memory. They also test the brain's basic functions by checking the size of the pupils and their response to light, assessing reactions to sensations such as heat and stab of the needle, and testing the ability to move their arms or legs. Computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging is required to evaluate possible brain injury. Traumatic brain injury occurs when an external mechanical force causes brain dysfunction. Brain trauma is usually the result of a violent hit to the head. An object that pierces the skull, such as a bullet, can also cause brain trauma. Mild trauma can be caused by temporary brain cell dysfunction. More serious brain trauma can lead to bruising, torn tissue, bleeding and other physical injuries to the brain, which can result in long-term complications or even death. Head injuries are the cause of disability and death of people under the age of 50, more than any other type of neurological impairment. Nearly half of people with severe head injuries die. The brain can be damaged even when the skull is not pierced.

Experience with Healthcare Telematics in Cyprus
  • Language: English
  • Tags: EMS Technology
Description

In this paper a review of three healthcare telematic applications in Cyprus are presented. These include a medical system for emergency telemedicine (AMBULANCE and EMERGENCY-112 projects), a diagnostic telepathology network in gynaecological cancer (TELEGYN), and a collaborative virtual medical team for home healthcare of cancer patients (DITIS). The problems associated with the deployment of the former two in routine clinical practise as well as the reasons of success of the third project will be briefly discussed.

Study and Design of Patient Flow at the Medicine Department of a University Hospital

  • Tags: EMS In Hospital EMS
Description

Most, if not all, public hospitals in Thailand have encountered a common problem regarding the increasing demand for medical services. The increasing number of patients causes so much strain on the hospital-s services, over-crowded, overloaded working hours, staff fatigue, medical error and long waiting time. This research studied the characteristics of operational processes of the medical care services at the medicine department in a large public university hospital. The research focuses on details regarding methods, procedures, processes, resources, and time management in overall processes. The simulation model is used as a tool to analyze the impact of various improvement strategies.

Design Patterns for Emergency Management Processes
  • Language: English
  • Tags: EMS
Description

Natural or human made disasters have a significant negative impact on the environment. At the same time there is an extensive effort to support management and decision making in emergency situations by information technologies. Therefore the purpose of the paper is to propose a design patterns applicable in emergency management, enabling better analysis and design of emergency management processes and therefore easier development and deployment of information systems in the field of emergency management. It will be achieved by detailed analysis of existing emergency management legislation, contingency plans, and information systems. The result is a set of design patterns focused at emergency management processes that enable easier design of emergency plans or development of new information system. These results will have a major impact on the development of new information systems as well as to more effective and faster solving of emergencies.

OXYGEN CONCENTRATION DURING PATIENT TRANSPORTATION IN THE AMBULANCE OF THE EMS
  • Language: English
  • Tags: Ambulance Services
Description

European Resuscitation Council Guidelines for Resuscitation 2010 and Advanced Life Support Provider Course teaches that the open oxygen supply must be removed from the patient during defibrillation to the distance of minimum of 1 meter. Scientific articles describe few incidents of fire during defibrillation in oxygen – enriched atmospheres. It was performed a series of measurement of the oxygen concentration in the ambulance vehicle of 10 cubic meters. The measurements were made in parked vehicle. Patient was seated on the stretchers and oxygen was applied with oxygen mask on high flow (15 l per minute). The oxygen concentration was measured on different places in the ambulance car – the patient’s face, on the chest, on the wall in front of the car, on the wall in the rear and on the celling. We measured temperature, atmospheric pressure and humidity together with oxygen concentration. The result of our study showed that the oxygen concentration has risen from 20.9 % at all locations of the ambulance. In certain locations the concentration has increased at least to 30 %. It has prepared recommendations for defibrillation during oxygen administration according to the literature and our study.
